Pere David’s Deer Watching Area


Pere David’s deer is a rare and protected animal in the world, which is also called “Nondescript” for its horn looks like deer, face like horse, hoof like cow and body like donkey. It has lived on the earth for more than 3 million years and has been regarded as an auspicious symbol since the ancient times. It is said that the ancient legend premier Jiang Ziya, or called Jiang Taigong in Zhou Dynasty, rides the “Nondescript”.

According to the record in the book “Investigation on Pere David’s deer Living Conditions”, the Qin Lake area is proved to be the hometown of Pere David’s deer, which is corroborated by the fact that most of the fossils have been unearthed here. It is also a typical case all over the country. The only whole fossil of Pere David’s deer in China kept in Taizhou Museum is discovered here.

4 Pere David’s deer were firstly brought to Qin Lake area in 1996. Through years of breeding, the number has been increased to more than 50 and each Pere David’s deer is healthy, plump and sturdy.
